Every year many people are hit by a whiplash. A whiplash is nothing else than a muscle tear which is in the calf muscle. The muscle tear is caused by a sudden powerful cocking of the calf muscle.

What is a whiplash?

A whiplash is a muscle tear high on the inside of the calf, just below the knee cavity. The calf muscle gives rise to a plantar flexion movement of the foot (stretching motion). The calf muscle thus ensures a sales movement. The sudden sudden deposition and tightening of the muscle can cause it to rupture slightly, in most cases.

Cause whiplash

The most common cause for a rupture in the calf muscle is during exercise. The muscle can not be sufficiently warm due to cold weather or a bad warm up. There is then so much force delivered to the muscle that the muscle breaks down. Many athletes give the example as if they were beaten by a whip, hit by a stone or a shoe after a kick.

  • Heavy pain in the calf
  • Sharp pain in the calf
  • Burning pain in the calf
  • Sometimes a "crack" is heard.

Diagnosis and treatment

After having observed a whiplash, it is important that the muscle is treated and protected and given rest. After the observation, ice can be used to relieve the pain. Then it is important to rest the muscle. Do this for about a few days to a week. A slight load on the muscle can then be given under supervision of a physiotherapist. The recovery of a whiplash is about 6 to 10 weeks.

During the recovery, it may be important to stretch the muscle sufficiently so that the fibers are subjected to strain. The recovery can therefore be faster and better. By stretching the fibers, a night splint can be worn in the nights. Choose the:

Or reduce the chance of muscle tear during exercise? Then look at a sports compression stocking if necessary. The brace provides extra compression and keeps the muscles warm during exercise.
