Almost 50% of pregnant women suffer from pelvic pain and / or low back pain during pregnancy. A pelvic band can provide relief from such complaints. Tissue connections in the body change under the influence of pregnancy hormones and the burden increases with the increasing weight of the unborn child. Many complaints can be resolved by wearing a pelvic band.

What is pelvic pain and pelvic instability?

In order to be able to give good advice, it is important to first know the differences between the various pain complaints. There are actually three terms that are often used interchangeably for these complaints: pelvic pain, pelvic instability and symphysiolysis.
  • Symphysiolysis. This literally means solving (lysis) the symphysis (connection) between the two pubes. Fortunately, these connections do not dissolve in real life, but they do become more flexible and elastic. The term symphysiolysis is actually only used with an extremely loose connection between the two pubes, but this is very rare.
  • Pelvic instability. Pelvic instability can occur during and after pregnancy. During pregnancy, tendons and connective tissue structures become more elastic. This is a natural response of the body to pregnancy to ensure there is enough room for the child to pass through during delivery. But these can also be stretched after the birth. The two pubes can therefore move more in relation to each other. This can cause pelvic pain symptoms and a functional limitation.
  • Pelvic pain. Is the most used term for pain complaints around the pelvis and the SI joint. The pain complaints often occur in the center front (on and or around the pubic bone) or around the rump. The pain can also radiate over the buttock, groin, on the back of the upper leg. But can increase with tiredness or with specific movements such as turning or stooping.

How can pelvic pain complaints be resolved?

If you receive a complaint about these symptoms during pregnancy, it is important to discuss this with your obstetrician, doctor and / or physical therapist. They can best advise you on the measures to reduce your symptoms. There is not one medicine that has helped you get rid of your symptoms in one go. A physiotherapist can give muscle-strengthening exercises and can give posture and movement advice. In addition, a good supporting pelvic girdle or pelvic band can be worn.

What does a pelvic band do?

There are different types of pelvic ligaments and pelvic braces available. Some only support the pelvis, others also the back. Depending on the nature and location of your complaints, you can only choose a support band for the pelvis. Or also a larger version that can be used as a back strap in addition to the pelvis to support the back. Regardless of the size of the pelvic band, the operation for the pelvis is the same. Circular pressure on the pelvis relieves the muscles, tendons and ligaments around the SI joint. As a result, the pain stimuli will decrease so that you will experience fewer pain complaints.

Does a pelvic band make muscles weak?

There are very clearly two opinions about this, in some cases quite strong supporters and opponents. As so often with these types of issues, there is something to be said for both opinions. Our opinion is that wearing a good pelvic band in combination with guidance from a physical therapist (and exercises) is the best treatment method. Wearing a pelvic band when there is a lot of standing has to be done reduces pain. The guidance and exercises of the physical therapist ensure that the muscles do not become weaker.

A pelvic band is a good tool for learning how to deal with the pain

Unfortunately, there are few exercises during pregnancy that can resolve the pain. Muscle strengthening exercises, possibly in combination with a pelvic band, can ensure that the symptoms do not get worse or that they get worse. It is important to find the right balance between rest and activity. When the pain is really severe, it is often best to adopt a position in the side position with a thick cushion between the legs.

Advice on selecting a pelvic band
