A sore neck can be very annoying and tiring. Your neck complaints can have several causes, the best known of course are the whiplash and the neck hernia. But a tiredness or (mild) injury of the neck muscles can of course also be the cause. Your neck muscles stabilize and steer your head, with every step and every movement you make. An injury to these muscles is therefore very annoying. To support these muscles and your head well, you can choose to buy a (temporary) neck brace or soft neck band.
A neck brace or neckband is known by a wider audience under the names:
As long as the size is correct, everyone can use neck braces or nkebands. The advice is to use a neck brace / neck strap no longer than strictly necessary. Ask your treated specialist for advice. This is to prevent the neck muscles from becoming unnecessarily weak. In some cases, for example in the case of degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, ALS or MS, it can sometimes be no more than wearing the neck brace / neck bandage for longer periods of time to support the head and cervical vertebrae.
Whiplash actually means "whip" and occurs when your head suddenly moves back and forth with force. This allows the straps and muscles in your neck to stretch. This often occurs in accidents such as a head-to-tail collision. Every year between 15,000 and 30,000 people in the Netherlands are confronted with a whiplash. A neck brace / neck bandage can provide support to support the neck muscles during heavy activities during the first weeks. It is nevertheless wise to reduce the use of the neckband within 3 to 4 weeks.
Just as with a regular hernia (Hernia Nuclei Pulposi), a protrusion of the intervertebral disc may occur between the neck vertebrae. This bulge can press on a nerve or on the spinal cord, causing pain complaints. These pain symptoms can manifest themselves as neck pain or radiating pain in an arm, with or without a loss of strength or loss of sensation. The latter depends on the location of the constriction. A 'regular' (lumbar / lower back) hernia is 7 times more common than a neck hernia. A neck brace can temporarily reduce pain, but the advice with a neck hernia is always to consult a (para) medical specialist. If one suffers from a degenerative disease that causes the neck muscles to become weaker or less controlled, a neck brace can offer much relief and comfort. If the neck muscles constantly have to work at their maximum in order to be able to raise the head slightly, they are doing the wrong thing. In addition, a neck brace can also ensure that the patient's field of vision finally becomes larger again because the head can finally be held upright again.
