Ankle braces that suit your complaint

Not every ankle brace is suitable for your situation. An ankle brace must fit perfectly and support the right part of your foot / ankle. If you suffer from your Achilles tendon, instability of your ankle or the continuous spraining of your ankle, a brace for your ankle offers a possible solution. An ankle brace is a good replacement for tape and gives your ankle rest when recovering after, for example, an inversion trauma or fracture.

A brief overview of the most common indications where ankle braces can be used:

  • Instability only
  • ankle / foot fractures
  • prevention
  • only arthrosis
  • single distortion / ankle sprain
  • Achilles tendon irritation
  • Soccer ankle
  • Haircut irritation
  • Acute ankle trauma

An ankle brace in case of ankle sprain or ankle bruise

Ankle sprain and ankle bruise is the most common sports injury in the Netherlands (Schmikkli and others sports injuries in the total playing field, NOC NSF 2002).
The overview below shows which actions during sports are the most provocative for the development of sports injuries:

  • Running, sprinting, running 290,000
  • Jumping 170,000
  • Contact opponent 290,000
  • Turning 130,000
  • Contact item 250,000

In the current guideline of the KNGF (Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapists) the wearing of a brace is advised from the moment that the swelling has decreased. The chance of a full recovery is greater if someone uses an ankle brace during the first 6 weeks after injury. The result is faster resumption of sports activity. However, wearing an ankle brace is no guarantee for being able to exercise without injury. The preventive use of an ankle brace ensures a substantial reduction in the chance of a repeated trauma. The EXO-L brace is a good example of this. A customized brace that can only be used preventively.

Tape or ankle brace?

The Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapists has clear guidelines in the field of injuries and ankle complaints. When do therapists recommend an ankle brace and when should you go for tape? Some therapists swear by a brace, others by tape. By combining research with practical experience, the Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapists has managed to create a clear picture of these two methods to be used. Below is a brief overview of the pros and cons.

Brace

Tape

  • In the long run, a brace is cheaper than tape.
  • Within a few hours a brace gives 4.5-12% less support due to the loosening effect. However, this is easily solved by tightening the brace.
  • Reduces the chance of recurrence of ankle sprain by 40-50%
  • Depending on the brace, it hardly impedes the 'normal' movement, if at all.
  • Patient can easily put a brace on and off.
  • A brace is satisfactory when the wearing comfort and support provided are in balance.
  • There are different types of braces with various support classes.

  • In the long term, tape is a lot more expensive than a brace
  • Within a few hours, tape provides 40-50% less support due to the loosening effect
  • Reduces the chance of recurrence of ankle sprain by 40-50%
  • 25% more obstructs the 'normal' movement of the ankle
  • To apply sports tape, a professional often needs to be involved. In addition, tape is more difficult to remove after the sport activity
  • Tape can be adjusted more easily and better to individual wishes.
  • The use of glue increases the chance of skin irritation

A comparative study between an ankle brace and tape stands or falls by the type of tape or brace that is used. Every brace has its own support class .

Wear an ankle brace while exercising

Ankle braces are often used by athletes. A brace used for sport must give as little impediment as possible. A sports brace or sports bandage is generally slightly smoother and slimmer in shape. Football, hockey, tennis, badminton, volleyball and handball are sports where ankle braces are used frequently. The ASO ankle brace , for example, is very suitable for football players. The Aircast A60, on the other hand, is less, due to the feeling of the ball. The latter, on the other hand, is often used by hockey players and tennis players. High demands are placed on sports braces. Does the ankle brace have to be durable? Can the brace get wet? How long can I wear the brace? These are questions that we are happy to answer for you in order to make the right choice.

Do my ankle muscles weaken when wearing an ankle brace?

That wearing ankle tape or brace leads to muscle weakening in athletes is a fable. An average Dutch soccer player sports two to three but a week. This is equivalent to being active for 4-6 hours. While playing football, the tape or brace serves as an aid to avoid creating a peak load on the ankle straps, thereby preventing new injury to the ankle. The muscles around the ankle receive sufficient stimuli not to relax. Wearing a brace provides protection but does not directly weaken the muscles.
